The VAO WASH program is committed to improving access to safe drinking water, promoting proper sanitation practices, and raising awareness about hygiene in the most marginalized communities. We focus on empowering individuals and communities, especially those living in poverty, to ensure they have the tools and education to overcome WASH-related challenges. Our goal is to reduce waterborne diseases, improve public health, and create long-lasting, positive changes in the communities we serve.

  1. Access to Safe Water

    • Water Supply Projects: We work to provide clean, potable water through the construction of wells, boreholes, and rainwater harvesting systems in rural areas. By partnering with local communities, we ensure sustainable water sources are established and properly maintained.

    • Water Treatment Education: We offer training on water purification methods, including safe storage and household-level water treatment, to ensure that communities can prevent water contamination.

  2. Sanitation Solutions

    • Improving Sanitation Facilities: We focus on the construction of hygienic and accessible latrines, particularly in rural communities where open defecation is prevalent. Our approach includes promoting the importance of proper waste management and sanitation to reduce the spread of diseases.

    • Promotion of Safe Sanitation Practices: Through community outreach, we educate on the significance of regular handwashing, menstrual hygiene management, and proper disposal of waste to create a clean and safe living environment.

  3. Hygiene Awareness and Education

    • Hygiene Promotion Campaigns: We organize awareness campaigns to educate communities about the importance of personal hygiene, including handwashing with soap, the safe handling of food, and maintaining clean living spaces. These campaigns involve interactive sessions, training workshops, and distribution of hygiene kits to enhance understanding and participation.

    • School WASH Programs: Our program extends to schools, where we educate children about hygiene and the benefits of safe water and sanitation, aiming to build lifelong habits and pass this knowledge to future generations.

Our approach to the WASH program is community-driven and participatory. We collaborate closely with local stakeholders, including traditional leaders, district assemblies, and community members, to identify needs and design solutions that are culturally appropriate and sustainable. Our projects are designed to not only address immediate needs but also foster long-term improvements in community health and well-being.

  1. Community Mobilization: We engage with local communities to raise awareness, build capacity, and ensure that residents actively participate in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of WASH interventions.

  2. Sustainability and Maintenance: We ensure that our WASH projects are sustainable by providing training to local water committees and community members on how to maintain water systems and sanitation facilities. This helps ensure long-term access to clean water and sanitation services.

  3. Monitoring and Evaluation: To measure the effectiveness of our WASH programs, we continuously monitor and evaluate our projects. We assess health outcomes, community participation, and sustainability to ensure that we are achieving our goals and making a lasting impact.

Through our WASH program, VAO has positively impacted thousands of lives, improving access to clean water, promoting better hygiene practices, and reducing the spread of waterborne diseases. Education

VAO’s Education Programs focus on ensuring equitable access to quality education for all, with a particular emphasis on marginalized groups such as girls, children with disabilities, and those living in remote communities. Our programs are designed to address key barriers to education, including inadequate infrastructure, low literacy rates, and lack of resources, while promoting lifelong learning and skills development. Through our efforts, we strive to build a more educated, informed, and empowered population capable of tackling the challenges of the future.

 Primary and Secondary Education Support

Our primary and secondary education initiatives are aimed at increasing access to quality schooling for children in rural and underserved communities. Key activities include:

  • School infrastructure development: We work to improve school facilities, including building and renovating classrooms, providing school supplies, providing sanitation facilities and creating safe learning environments.

  • School enrollment campaigns: To reduce dropout rates and ensure more children are enrolled in school, we conduct awareness campaigns in local communities and assist with enrollment procedures.

Literacy and Numeracy Programs

For many adults and children, basic literacy and numeracy skills are the key to better opportunities. Our Literacy and Numeracy Programs aim to:

  • Improve literacy rates: We offer adult literacy classes, particularly for women and marginalized groups, to help them gain essential reading and writing skills.

  • Support early childhood education: Our programs provide foundational literacy and numeracy training for young children, setting them up for success as they progress through school.

Vocational and Technical Education

Recognizing the importance of practical skills for employment, VAO promotes vocational and technical education as a way to provide young people with the tools to enter the workforce. Our vocational training programs focus on:

  • Skills development: We offer training in various trades such as carpentry, tailoring, hairdressing, and electrical work, empowering young people to start their own businesses or gain employment.

  • Apprenticeship programs: Through partnerships with local artisans and businesses, we offer hands-on apprenticeship opportunities to help youth gain experience and confidence in their chosen fields.

Women empowerment

The mission of VAO’s Women Empowerment Program is to foster gender equality and create opportunities for women to realize their full potential. By addressing key barriers such as limited access to reproductive health services, inadequate sanitation, and financial dependence, we strive to empower women to become active contributors to their families, communities, and the economy. Our program focuses on four key areas: SRHR education, gender transformative change, sustainable livelihoods, and entrepreneurship.

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Programs

We are committed to ensuring that women and girls have access to the information, services, and support they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. Our SRHR programs aim to:

  • Educate women and girls about their sexual and reproductive rights, family planning, and maternal health.

  • Provide access to reproductive health services, including counseling, contraception, and safe childbirth options.

  • Promote awareness about issues like adolescent pregnancy, early marriage, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to reduce health risks and promote healthier lives.

  • Advocate for policies that protect women’s reproductive rights and access to services.

 Reusable Pads Initiative

Access to sanitary products is a significant challenge for many women, especially in rural areas. Our Reusable Pads Initiative focuses on providing affordable, sustainable menstrual hygiene products to women and girls. This initiative aims to:

  • Distribute reusable sanitary pads to young girls and women, helping them manage their menstrual cycles with dignity and hygiene.

  • Provide education on menstrual health and hygiene practices, ensuring women understand how to use, clean, and store reusable pads.

  • Promote sustainability by offering a more affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to single-use sanitary products.

  • Reduce absenteeism in schools: By ensuring girls have access to menstrual products, we aim to improve attendance and participation in education.

Gender Transformative Change for Women

VAO is committed to challenging and transforming harmful gender norms and practices that restrict women’s rights and opportunities. Our Gender Transformative Change initiatives aim to:

  • Promote gender equality by challenging stereotypes, biases, and social norms that limit women’s roles in society.

  • Raise awareness about issues such as domestic violence, gender-based violence (GBV), and harmful cultural practices that affect women’s safety and well-being.

  • Engage men and boys in discussions about gender equality, encouraging them to support the empowerment of women and girls.

  • Support legal reforms to strengthen women’s rights and ensure they have access to justice and protection from violence.

Sustainable Livelihoods for Women

We believe that economic independence is key to empowering women. Our Sustainable Livelihoods program focuses on providing women with the skills and resources they need to support themselves and their families. This program includes:

  • Vocational training: Providing women with skills in various trades such as sewing, hairdressing, and catering to help them start businesses or secure employment.

  • Microfinance support: Offering small loans and financial literacy programs to women, helping them start or expand small businesses and improve their financial independence.

  • Agriculture and agribusiness: Training women in sustainable farming practices, organic agriculture, and food production, giving them the tools to increase food security and income for their families.

  • Access to markets: Connecting women entrepreneurs with local and regional markets to sell their products and expand their businesses.

Agribusiness and Entrepreneurship Programs

VAO’s Agribusiness and Entrepreneurship Program focuses on providing women with the tools to thrive in business and agriculture. This program includes:

  • Training in agriculture: Women are taught sustainable farming techniques, livestock management, and crop diversification, helping them increase agricultural production and income.

  • Entrepreneurship education: Women are trained in business management, marketing, and financial planning to help them start, run, and grow their own businesses.

  • Access to resources: VAO connects women with resources such as land, seeds, equipment, and financial support to enhance their agricultural and entrepreneurial activities.

  • Building networks: We help women connect with other entrepreneurs, creating support networks that foster growth and shared success.

Our Women Empowerment Program is designed with a holistic and community-centered approach. We work closely with women, community leaders, and local organizations to ensure that the programs are culturally appropriate and responsive to the needs of each community. We provide continuous support and follow-up to ensure the sustainability of our initiatives.

  1. Community Engagement: We engage women at every stage of the program, ensuring their active participation in decision-making and planning.

  2. Capacity Building: We offer training, mentorship, and support to help women develop new skills and improve their existing abilities.

  3. Partnerships: We collaborate with local, national, and international organizations to amplify the impact of our programs and ensure that women have access to a wide range of resources and opportunities.

Disability

VAO advocates for the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and works to address the cultural and societal barriers that limit their access to education, healthcare, employment, and social participation. We are committed to promoting a holistic approach to disability inclusion that tackles stigma and discrimination while empowering individuals with disabilities to claim their rights and become active contributors to their communities.

The Issue of Stigma and Exclusion

Before the promulgation of the Persons with Disability Act (Law/Act 715 of 2006), PWDs in Ghana faced significant challenges due to cultural beliefs that viewed disability as a form of witchcraft, bad luck, or demonic possession. These perceptions have led to the exclusion of people with disabilities from essential services and societal participation, including:

  • Limited access to basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.

  • Barriers to education, where children with disabilities are often kept in isolation and denied the right to attend school.

  • Discrimination in the workplace and limited opportunities for career advancement or social involvement, even for individuals with high academic qualifications.

  • Cultural practices where children with disabilities were sometimes killed shortly after birth or adults with disabilities were excluded from social gatherings.

Core Programs Under Disability Rights and Empowerment

Our Disability Rights and Empowerment Program is centered around four key areas: education, empowerment, advocacy, and community sensitization. These programs are designed to equip individuals with disabilities and their communities with the knowledge and resources to ensure full participation and access to opportunities.
